Marathon Elementary School

Hopkinton, MA

Marathon Elementary School is a two-story structure with a new entrance drive off of Hayden Rowe Street, which bisects the site along the western edge of the parcel. The project and the associated site development is located on the northern half of the site, leaving the southern half undeveloped.

The new school serves an enrollment of 395 students in kindergarten and first grade as well as 80 Pre-K students (half-day, split between morning and afternoon). In accordance with the Educational Program, the new school provides flexible space for differentiated instruction to allow students to learn and continuously grow as independent, confident, resilient, and thoughtful individuals.

The school is designed to be flexible, sustainable, and appropriate to its setting. The ‘T’ shape building consists of three wings. Two of the wings contain classrooms and the third contains a gym, cafeteria, music space and utility spaces. At the intersection of the three wings is a central core heart space which contains the main entries to the school, administration spaces and media center. The entire school is two stories high except for certain preschool classrooms near the front entry and the utility spaces at the rear of the building, both of which are one story. The long classroom wing is oriented east/west, ideal for natural light. Likewise, the central core spaces receive ideal north and south natural light from overhead clerestory glazed openings. The $47 million project was completed in 2018.
