Mildred H. Aitken Elementary School

Seekonk, MA

The Mildred H. Aitken Elementary School is one of two schools serving Pre-K -5 in Seekonk, MA. The elementary school population is spread evenly across the Town, but the capacity of the two schools is disproportionately on the south side. Because the district had been experiencing slight but steady growth, the decision was made to expand the northern school to align learning opportunities and enrollments more closely between the two schools.

A ten-classroom addition includes six general classrooms, three SPED and Sensory Learning spaces, and a makerspace with a large overhead door that opens to a covered work area adjoining an outdoor classroom space. The addition is an extension of an existing school that DRA previously expanded in 1997. The single story, double-loaded corridor design provides agile learning environments at reasonable cost. With most of the casework and storage being moveable, teachers can reconfigure their space to support different teaching styles or curricular needs. The project also incorporated new energy efficient boilers to serve the entire complex as well as air conditioning throughout the facility.
