Work began with a feasibility study to investigate expansion options for the existing two-story library building. Following this, schematic plans were developed. A grant was received from the Connecticut State library and also a Federal Small Cities Grant for accessibility improvements. Construction was complete in 2008.
The project includes complete interior and exterior renovations to the existing 1970’s contemporary library, including new windows, and architecturally pleasing bay windows that are also a feature in the new addition. The two-story expansion, to the north, will house the Children’s Library on the main level and future expansion on the lower level. The cupola over the Children’s Room will not only bring natural light into the center of the space, but serve as a beacon to identity for the library on its town centralized site. A new entrance, including both a new stair and elevator, will be constructed in the location of the current entrance. Alternates were used in the bidding process, but due to the low bids received all of the alternates have been included in the project.
