Windsor Public Library

Windsor, CT

The original library located on the Town Green with very little site available for development. The centerpiece of the library is a historic 1777 residence, which had been previously added on to in the 70’s. The preliminary design challenge was to re-incorporate all the wasted space within the existing library to minimize the size of the needed addition.

The existing two-story courtyard was in-filled, although an added upper clerestory window at the roof and a glass floor allows natural light to continue to fill the library. At the east end of the existing building, where the library had no basement, the roof and first floor structure were supported, and a new basement excavated below. Interior reorganization provided the library with a 25% increase in space. In addition to reorganization, additions where added onto both sides of the existing library. The project was completed in 2006.
