The Learning Center for the Deaf Dormitories

Framingham, MA

After initially working with TLC to create a master plan for their campus we then provided interior design services for two dormitories.

For the boys’ dormitory we converted an existing office to a student computer area, converted an existing bedroom to a snack area, renovated the bedrooms and updated restrooms with shower areas. For the girls’ dormitory the living room and computer areas were renovated as well as a study group nook/game area.

Providing interior design services to deaf clients created an opportunity for us to strengthen our space planning abilities. We needed to be sure that students could face each other at all times whether they were watching TV, playing a game or studying on the computer. We met this space planning challenge by incorporating multiple seating options and movable furniture to optimize communication amongst the group.

We used high quality, durable materials that are fire retardant yet still have a residential feel. Strong colors were used to provide a contrasting background for sign language. The project was completed in 2013.
