YMCA of Greater Worcester Central Branch

Worcester, MA

The YMCA of Greater Worcester Central Branch facility has been altered significantly over the past 100 years to respond to changing societal needs and evolving program requirements. Unfortunately, the expanding complex had lost sight of its original architectural intention.

The YMCA initiated a design competition to select an architect to guide them through the renovation process. DRA was selected by the Y’s Board of Directors for its vision and approach which emphasized an overall master plan with prioritized elements which best accomplished the goals of increasing membership, creating a new image and strengthening community ties.

Our solution proposed a new glass lobby connecting to Main Street with direct visibility to a new Wellness Center and new circulation core providing access to all levels of the renovated facility. The other “high priority” items to be renovated include the men’s, women’s and family locker rooms, the Teen Center and member lounges.

After being hired the scope of the project changed and included expansion of the Wellness Center which required the demolition and relocation of administrative offices to an adjacent building. An elevator was installed to connect the various levels to the adjacent building. The existing gym was transformed into two new studios and new locker rooms are located at the entry level. Various aesthetic improvements to the existing lobby and teen center provide a more welcoming feel to the facility. A new light tower and entrance vestibule are complemented by site and parking improvements. The project was completed in 2007.
