DRA Celebrates Marathon Elementary School Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

DRA joined students, parents, school officials, community members and project team members to celebrate the completion of the new Marathon Elementary School in Hopkinton, MA by holding a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, June 9th.

The event included participation from community and school groups, such as the Hopkinton Boy Scouts, Hopkinton Girl Scouts, Hopkinton High School Unite volunteers, and the Hopkinton High School band.

The school’s name celebrates Hopkinton’s sister city relationship with Marathon, Greece. Dignitaries from the Consul General of Greece in Boston, and the Boston Athletic Association, also participated in the event and presented a gold marathon wreath.

After remarks and presentations, the school was open for the public to tour the new 97,000 SF facility. The new school houses more than 25 classrooms, a media center, cafeteria, gym and music room. The $47 million Marathon school replaces the Center School on Ash Street and will serve 625 children in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first grade.

The early-childhood school’s entryway floor incorporates a blue-and-yellow starting line, as well as the inscription “It all starts here”. This theme, utilized throughout the facility, serves to remind visitors of Hopkinton’s place as the starting point of the Boston Marathon, that the headwaters of the Charles River begin here, and that this school will serve as the starting point for early-childhood education in Hopkinton for years to come.

The project is targeting Silver LEED Certification, and has sustainable features such as rooftop solar power installations, LED and motion detector lights, light harvesting, window glazing with low-E insulated glass, and low VOC materials.

The project team includes: Colantonio, Inc., as Construction Managers, and Compass Project Management, as Owner’s Project Managers, and DRA as the architects.
