Sustainable & Green Buildings

As members of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), DRA is committed to energy and environmental design and is experienced in the implementation of these concepts as they relate to school design. Sustainable design is becoming a requirement for many building projects as opposed to an option. Clients are looking for green materials and environmentally responsible buildings and DRA has the experience and expertise to deliver.

The Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) green building rating system is an important tool in guiding a project from planning through construction and operation to meet sustainability goals. DRA employs LEED Certified Professionals and supports LEED training and testing for staff. Currently, Carl Franceschi, Jim Barrett and Paul Brown are LEED Certified Designers and other team members are preparing for the test.

We are familiar with the multitude of sources for financial incentives and educational program assistance at the national, state, regional and community levels. The DRA team works with school officials to determine the project goals, standards, resources and level of commitment as it relates to life-cycle costs and operational budgets for the building and community. We make sure that these goals focus on improving the educational environment, reducing impact on the natural environment, reducing operational costs and increasing energy efficiency. By integrating these goals at during the process, DRA can explore solutions while balancing costs and developing a sustainable strategy for the project.

DRA has had several projects receive grants for green design. Three of these were through the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative for research and implementation of alternative energy sources. We have a database of green funding sources throughout the country.

Newton South High School includes energy efficient building envelope, high performance glazing systems, roof water capture which is used to flush a portion of the schools toilets, waterless urinals, a photovoltaic system for capturing solar energy, and high efficiency and HVAC systems.
