Built on land formerly occupied by abandoned buildings and claimed by rival gangs, the school brings an experimental element to the city?s system. Organized into 4 academies of 150 students each, which are located on the second and third floors, students share core gym, theater, music, library and cafeteria spaces on the first floor. The surrounding community was heavily involved in the development of the school design, including over 20 community meetings to gather input. The building has been received positively by the community and has been subject to little graffiti or vandalism. Serious crime in the area has dropped 25% in the first six months since the school?s completion.
