North Adams Public Library
North Adams, MA

The original library, a historic mansion from the 19th century could not meet the needs of a 21st century library,  had many code violations and a basement and attic that were inaccessible to the public.  With the design and construction of a substantial  addition in the rear,  new stairs and an elevator allow the basement and third floor to become usable space.  The library now houses a large meeting room, staff room, an area for the Literacy program, offices and storage, as well as an overall increase in library collection and patron space.  The building was planned to maintain the ambience of the communitys living room, while at the same time incorporating all the elements necessary for a modern, efficient library including the latest technology.  The building incorporates a geothermal heating and cooling system, and photovoltaic panels  for a more efficient and renewable energy source.  These features plus the use of sustainable materials and finishes allowed the library to become the first LEED Certified public library in New England.
