Hampshire County Courthouse Northampton, MA
DRA's design for the renovation and expansion of the historic 1899 courthouse was completed in three phases: restoration of the courthouse, renovation and expansion to the Hall of Records for additional courtroom facilities, and the conversion of an adjacent garage to house the new Hall of Records.
The old Hall of Records and courthouse are located on a sloped site, which was separated by Court Street. The two buildings were connected by a three-story glass link that bridged Court Street. During construction, Court Street was converted to a pedestrian walkway that passed under the link. Historic restoration of the original courthouse included the original painting in the vaulted ceiling of the Superior Court, the terra cotta and oak frescos, and Egyptian stencil work. Brass lighting fixtures were re-lamped, rewired, and refinished. Old furniture was maintained and refinished. Windows were replaced with double-pane glass to improve acoustics while retaining the stained-glass detail.
